Planet Anarres. Shevek's farewell party.
The scientist wants to leave her home to continue her research on the neighboring planet Urras. The two politically opposed neighboring planets, the anarchic system Anarres and the capitalist planet Urras, have limited their communication to a minimum. Shevek stands between the two forms of society. Her research contradicts the ideals of solidarity in her homeland, and
the anarchist also encounters ideological resistance on Urras. Shevek's last evening on Anarres proves difficult. Her best friend Bedap, a staunch anarchist, and space tourist Vea, who has traveled from capitalist Urras, are guests at her party. The characters argue about Shevek's departure and try to outdo each other with their opinions.
