"We would never trample on money. People are assigned the value of money and then they are supposed to multiply it. Each in their own way. The more options the less choices people make, after all death is a certainty for all of them." Jelinek in Abraumhalde
Abraumhalde was the Student Theatre’s winter production 2019/20202. The production looks at G.E. Lessing’s Olympus of Enlightenment Nathan the Wise (1779), through E. Jelinek’s literary lense Abraumhalde .
The production begins by telling Nathan the Wise as an Enlightenment fairy tale in which contemporary society seeks solace. Gradually, the narrative crumbles due to the increasing insertion of Jelinek texts, which do not leave the performers unimpressed. In the course of the play, Jelinek’s dripping texts expose the gaps in social peace and make the setting underneath visible.
Is Humanism is still possible nowadays? What value is ascribed to human beings in the utilitarian economic system? What old burdens do we carry around with us and will we ever get rid of them? In the end, something new is built out of the old. What exactly?
The production showed twice in Zurich (December 2020 and July 2021) and once at the Studierenden Theater Festival Bern (March 2022).
